The boss enters the room and announces emphatically: \u201cGuys, we absolutely have to meet the deadline this week. The investors are breathing down our necks!\u201d The atmosphere in the room changes immediately \u2013 a mixture of nervousness, adrenaline and perhaps even slight reluctance is in the air. Perhaps you are familiar with situations like this, or even more drastic ones, in which a boss puts the entire organization under constant pressure?<\/p>\n<p>At first glance, pressure seems to be an effective tool: it wakes up teams, creates a certain urgency and gets the engine running. But like a car running at full speed: At some point, it smokes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-18909c13 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"18909c13\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-16df62f0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"16df62f0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The short-term effect \u2013 sometimes pressure works!<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7cf315b0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7cf315b0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Pressure can actually have a motivating effect in the short term. Studies show that moderate stress \u2013 also known as \u201ceustress\u201d \u2013 can boost our cognitive abilities in the short term. Daniela Kaufer, a neuroscientist at the University of California, Berkeley, found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.berkeley.edu\/2013\/04\/16\/researchers-find-out-why-some-stress-is-good-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that acute, manageable stress in controlled situations can sharpen the brain<\/a>. A small turbo is ignited, so to speak: Thinking becomes more focused, decisions are made faster and the urge to deliver results increases.<\/p>\n<p>A certain amount of pressure can be particularly useful in really critical situations \u2013 such as emergency operations. Stress is also an incentive for some sportswomen or professional actors. However, these effects are not only fleeting, but also fragile. Pressure only works if it is clearly limited, well communicated and perceived as a challenge \u2013 and not as a threat.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6d8d97aa elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"6d8d97aa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4addd99e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4addd99e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Pressure becomes problematic over time<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3444f17c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3444f17c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>But what happens when pressure becomes a permanent strategy? It is worth taking a look at Richard Lazarus\u2019 standard work \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.de\/books\/edition\/Stress_and_Emotion\/mATTP46QIp4C?hl=de&amp;gbpv=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stress and Emotion. A new Synthesis<\/a>\u201d. He is a pioneer of stress research. Back in the 1980s, Lazarus coined the concept that stress always depends on how people perceive a situation. If the stressor \u2013 in this case pressure \u2013 is a challenge, it spurs us on. If, on the other hand, we perceive it as an obstacle or excessive demand, the downward spiral begins: creativity suffers, performance decreases, and the end result is often health consequences such as burnout or anxiety disorders. Daniel C. Ganster &amp; Christopher C. Rosen provide an overview of the research\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/258154177_Work_Stress_and_Employee_Health_A_Multidisciplinary_Review?enrichId=rgreq-8738447620681592f0770daefceb9797-XXX&amp;enrichSource=Y292ZXJQYWdlOzI1ODE1NDE3NztBUzoxNDk2NTY4NTE5ODAyODhAMTQxMjY5MjM4MjMwNA%3D%3D&amp;el=1_x_2&amp;_esc=publicationCoverPdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the Journal of Management in July 2013<\/a>. They also show how chronic pressure not only reduces productivity, but can also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and other health problems.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, such a working style poisons the corporate culture: employees lose trust in their managers, the team structure breaks down and innovative ideas fizzle out because the focus is only on \u201cdelivery at any price\u201d. In the worst case, figures are even embellished or even falsified just to avoid having to face an aggressive superior with bad news.<\/p>\n<p>Especially when the pressure turns into uncivilized, rude behavior, the costs for the company are very high. In their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2013\/01\/the-price-of-incivility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvard Business Review article<\/a>, Christine Porath &amp; Christine Pearson describe the various forms of incivility that can become a problem in the workplace. Their examples are varied. In some companies, employees suffer from a \u201cboss from hell\u201d who actively oppresses and insults them. Other times, managers are described as not listening to their colleagues and brushing their ideas off the table. But more subtle forms of rudeness, such as replying to emails during a meeting, also have negative effects. Such rude behavior by superiors often leads to a deliberate reduction in work input, lower quality, less commitment and ultimately even the decision to leave the workplace. Managers who believe they can achieve top performance with constant pressure are mistaken. Pressure is not sustainable. It may deliver short-term results, but it burns up resources \u2013 the mental and physical energy reserves of employees. Too much pressure is counterproductive and even dangerous, especially when dealing with complex challenges. This is where new ideas, creative and perhaps unusual suggestions are needed. Diamonds are created under pressure, but not innovative, well thought-out strategies that are suitable for the challenge.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-163641e7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"163641e7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-11618163 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"11618163\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The alternative: psychological safety instead of constant stress<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71608751 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"71608751\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Instead of relying on constant pressure, contemporary leadership should be based on psychological safety. This means leading teams in such a way that they dare to make mistakes, contribute new ideas and communicate openly. This type of culture not only creates innovation, but also resilience. And it delivers better results in the long term \u2013 without employees sneaking home at the end of the week completely burnt out.<\/p>\n<p>This does not mean that ambitious targets should not be set. It\u2019s the quantity that makes the poison.
